"I grew up near the sea, on the southwest coast of Ireland. When I swim there, I rarely go out of my depth, but I will spend an age looking to the horizon, suspended, neither here nor there. The savage beauty of the sea has thrown up a multitude of strange stories since the beginning of time. The Siren, a mythical creature that is half bird, half woman, is a story about femine power. In the Odyssey, Sirens lured sailors to destruction with their sweet hypnotic song. Their beauty had a terrifying power.
