The flower can be seen as a visible symbol of a culmination of unseen processes in a landscape, in this case Sussex. The landscapes we see now are the culmination of millennia of different factors and changes, both known and unknown. The flowers are striped and represent the different strata that are present in the ground and cliff faces that I see when out and about. I chose black as the background colour as for me it represents deep time. The white grid references the physicality of the fabric, but also the chalk so common in the area. When read together, the four works comprising The Sussex Blooms read 'Time + Sea, Shifts > Bone'.
