The suburban wood sits in a fissure under a dual carriageway, by a river and a row of houses. It is an in between place, an outskirt to a large city. The trees there look stark, and the vegetation and undergrowth are poor in comparison to the countryside proper, the species which grow there are fewer in number. Around midnight the light from the houses and passing traffic illuminates every third or fourth tree. The nexus is frequented by dog walkers, but hurriedly as their make their way to the nearby park, which lies over the bridge.
