Walking through the garden of the main house on the island of Eilean Shona, which was heavily shadowed in the morning, I came to a gate, which I continued through and then followed a path up a steep slope. There I reached an area with a prominent Monkey Puzzle with many felled trees lying to either side of it. Scrambling, then stooping I made my way through the felled trees and doubled back on myself, slightly disorientated, to find a large clearing with more felled and fallen trees, where the flowing shadows of mature beech trees were cast across the undulating ground. Studying the clearing more I noticed the subtle influence of human activity in the mixture of planted and native species, along with the obvious logging and reflected on how a few hours work with a saw can leave a landscape altered for years, changing the feel of the place irrevocably.
