Benson uses black and white raw image data from robotic interplanetary missions to create large-format landscape photographs. The image was constructed from fragments captured by machines hundreds of millions of miles from Earth, and explore the visual legacy of over five decades of robotic space exploration. This image was created from raw data collected by the Mars Reconnaissance Orbiter on 25 November 2006. The image is of the southern hemisphere of Mars, which is covered in seasonal carbon dioxide ice, more commonly known as 'dry-ice'. The cold temperatures on Mars mean that its south pole is covered in a dry-ice cap all year round.
