Japanese Tree
Another of the paintings from Eilean Shona, Japanese Tree depicts one of the rarest botanical specimens on the island. The tree, Podocarpus totara, is native to New Zealand where it grows on both the North and South Islands. It is slow growing and due to this, coupled with its ability to withstand cutting, it is often used in the practice of bonsai. The location of the tree further suggests this aspect, nestling at the back of one of the island’s croft houses, where it is dwarfed by the fast-growing plantation on the slope behind. The specimen would be the furthest north, were it not for one at Inverewe Garden in Wester Ross.
