Over the last couple of years Claire Curneen has created a series of figurative sculptures, which explore the human body in a miraculous state of change. In Still Life II, the figure erupts with a covering of flowers, which burst into life and overwhelm the figure beneath. Most cultures have adopted the flower to symbolise life, beauty and death and here Curneen presents us with a figure that is potent, seductive and life affirming. Porcelain is a notoriously difficult material to master and even more so at this scale, yet the results are remarkable. This piece also brings to mind the large scale porcelain sculptures of 18th century Meissen, a period of ceramic art that fascinates the artist.
