The work Cathedral was commissioned by the curators Double Decker as part of the Strange Cities exhibition for the Onassis Cultural Centre in Athens. The proposal of the project would be the artist’s vision of a city never visited. It is influenced by EM Forster’s short story ‘The Machine Stops’ which discusses a future city world that is like a ‘hive’, where the colony support the city structure as nodes within the ‘machine’ from their individual cells. Here there was a sense of layering, replenishing, and an ever-evolving foundation to the evolution of a city. A state of flux, a structure where people and habitat were the substance and support when brought together; influencing the 'taste' and colour of their surroundings. Also the feeling of traversing districts within a city having no previous visual knowledge of, which made it feel like a shifting maze, historically, socially and geographically, where apertures of time opened and closed; this influenced the abstract structured background of 'Cathedral' and helps to give a futuristic feel of a utopian matrix.
